Is Life a Fairy Tale?
Honestly, some parts of life just are not the fairy tales we probably heard as kids. Sometimes life just happens upon us and to us whether we want it or not. Sometimes life happens and it does not turn out like we planned. But we are not done, yet.
Common Life Adjustments
- Loss of relationship through breakup, divorce or death
- Dealing with health problems
- Dissatisfying career or relationship
- Loss of a job
- Parenting dissatisfaction
- Empty Nest Syndrome
- What is the impact?
Crisis may be too stern of a word but crises in life interrupt our daily schedules and psychic balance. Being thrown out of routine or into a new routine not of your choosing comes with a variety of feelings. Sometimes you can pinpoint it to a single life event. Sometimes it is a series of small events. But you are feeling more vulnerable or your feelings are more intense than usual and you are more aware of these types of feelings:
- Avoiding things: people, obligations, fun
What does the solution look like?
Good news, recognizing is the first step to understanding and working towards a new life plan. Good news for your family and friends, working towards something more meaningful for your self is good for them, too.
The solution is a life tune-up. Figuring out your feelings. Identifying those situations, expectations and events that knocked you off balance and made you doubtful. Reviewing your thinking and reframing or renaming “it”. Then using that experience to redefine what your life course can be. We work together to implement your plan while identifying the people in your life who will support you and provide perspective. Therapy is the beginning and people benefit from having family, trusted friends, etc., to provide support outside of the counseling session. Eventually, counseling tapers off and becomes more of an as-needed check-in.
Any additional benefits?
Absolutely. You will be able to deal with life’s ups and downs more effectively. You will be more resilient when new challenges are thrown at you. As a parent, you will be more able to help your kids cope with life, too. Other common responses:
- New self-worth
- Renewed sense of hope
- Renewed vigor, libido
- Emotional resiliency
- Feeling of making a contribution
- Feeling like “you’re back!!”
